Welcome Te Kura O Whangara
Whangara School is situated 33 km north-east of Gisborne City, in a very pleasant valley. Whangara School is a State funded, full primary school (to Intermediate level). This school is currently a Decile 4 rural school.
At the end of 2019, the school role stood at 84 children, with more new entrants enrolling throughout the year as they turn 5. The schools current enrolment scheme states that our maximum roll is 60 students, so we are taking no new enrolments from any new whanau who reside out of zone.

School will be OPEN next Thursday 16th March 2023.
Sat Mar 11 09:14amMorena whÄnau, this to update you that our kura will be OPEN on Thursday 16th March.
NZEI/PPTA/ Principals throughout NZ will be taking Strike Action, however due to our disruptions of late and impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, our kaiako/ NZEI have decided to be exempt from Strike Action. Schools in TairÄwhiti have this option.
However whÄnau, we support the actions of our colleagues across the motu.
Our tamariki need a quality education. And we want to give that to them.
Unfortunately, the funding for our schools is not enough for us to give us the time we would like to support all our kids to thrive.
We need to attract and retain educators by ensuring that teaching is a valued and attractive profession.
Principals and teachers in primary and area schools have considered at length offers from the government to settle our respective collective agreements.
The offers did not meet our expectations, nor make sufficient steps towards the changes we need for our children to succeed.
You may have seen that we voted to take industrial action on 16 March.
It’s the last thing we wanted to do. And the decision was not taken lightly.
We felt that this was the only way the government would listen and recognise that when they support our children to learn and succeed, we are supporting whÄnau and communities to thrive.
We look forward to another great year in 2023 – and together with your support, building the case for better investment in our tamariki.

Tue Feb 21 05:58pmKia ora whanau,
We look forward to welcoming your tamariki back to kura tomorrow. We thank you for your support and patience as we organise kura. Today kaiåwhina contacted all whanau who they could connect with and checking in on cell phones and landlines. It was also a reminder that some whanau have not updated cellphones, so please – email or let us know updated numbers as soon as possible.
Today, kaiako also spent time re-planning our kaupapa to connect with the real, authentic learning opportunities based around the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle. We also understand that our akonga will return with a wide range of experiences in the last week so our focus will be on hauora / well-being and whanaungatanga. Some important messages for whanau:
Our power is on and we are hoping that it remains stable. We rely on the power for our water/toilets etc.
We have tanks of water and the school pool is ready. Akonga need to bring a named water bottle.
Buses will be running as normal. Waiomoko/Panikau/Glenroy bus run is ok. Same times for buses.
At present there is no internet/wifi- so our connectivity is poor.
To contact the school – please ring 022 572 8803 or try the landline (but no guarantee it will work)
Kaiako/Koka Lisa can be contacted by emails but do not rely on these being checked during the day
Updates will be posted on facebook/ school Apps/emails – so please check.
If your tamariki are sick, a reminder to keep them at home untill they are well.
School Lunches will be provided for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week only – thanks to Pukuora.
Pack togs, towels and water bottles for kura.
We will some how tune in to Te Matatini tomorrow at 10am (TV2) to support and watch Whangara-mai-tawhiti Kapa Haka, with Koka Te Oranga and Koka Shaela performing. Nga mihi, Koka Lisa
School Closure – Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th Feb due to Cyclone Gabrielle
Sun Feb 12 11:34amKia ora whanau,
Due to the significant warnings and impact that Cylcone Gabrielle will have in our area, we are making the decision now to close kura for Monday 13th Feb and Tuesday 14th Feb 2023.
We need whanau to use today to get prepared for their own whanau needs and pretty much hunker down safely for the next couple of days.
Take the time to get prepared. There will be no distance learning available as strong possibility power outages-but use this ‘real life’ opportunity to teach your tamariki about weather systems, read the weather maps, use the apps, emergency packs- (even do some drawing, take photos, and writing of the taiao, looking after their pets and whanau- so much..!)
Kia haumaru te noho whÄnau – we will keep in touch as much as we can!
